Plan to join us this Sunday as we launch our new 8-month series getting acquainted with the story of God’s Word at the 8:45 and 10:30 a.m. services. Don’t forget to be reviewing your HANDy summary of the Old Testament story and reading chapter 1 in The Story: The Bible as one continuing story of God and His people. See you Sunday!

We are looking forward to our Sunday launch of our Christmas Season with the theme:  Good News of Great Joy for All People.  I don’t know how we could have written a more positive, hopeful, encouraging theme!  But we didn’t write it!  This is the message of Christmas proclaimed by the angels to the shepherds who were going to be one of the first people to get a glimpse of the Messiah.  It remains the message to any of us who will  respond as the shepherds did, “Let us go and see…”  We hope this Christmas will provide lots of opportunities for us to spend time with Jesus in a way that the reason for which He came will be our reality.  Hope to see you Sunday as we start the journey together.

God has blessed SBC with some special reasons to be grateful this Thanksgiving season:  last week, we enjoyed the opportunity to spend some time with our former youth pastor at SB, Harold and Coni Knepper, and three of their national leaders with Hope of the Nations (today one of our elders is treating them to the beauty of Yosemite!). It was exciting to get an update of how God is working through them in Tanzania, Africa, and to be able to provide some help for them in the establishing of a new primary school. We’ll share with you some great news in this regard on Sunday morning. This weekend, Bob and Barbara Francis will be our guests. They were around SBC in the very earliest days and have served faithfully with Cru (formerly Campus Crusade For Christ) for many years. Because of their varied and lengthy ministry experience, I have asked them to help with the message this Sunday and be available for you to meet and greet. Give thanks with me for the wonderful missionary family we are connected to at SBC. See you Sunday!

We are looking forward to a great week with Harold and Coni Knepper and their Hope of the Nations leaders Moses, Dismas, and Sylvester. Join us Sunday morning for a great Bible challenge from I Thessalonians 5:1-11, come back in the afternoon for ice cream and a chance to hear about this expanding ministry, and book some time during next week to get together personally with them – your heart for missions will be encouraged and challenged.

Looks like winter is here:   Twain Harte is white; the freeze-warning light is flashing on my thermometer; and the power is out!  If we needed any reminders that this Saturday night is the best night of the year – an extra hour to sleep! – we now have several!  So…after you get that extra hour of rest…make sure you also spend some time in God’s Word…and with His people on Sunday!

The prophet Isaiah proclaimed the following invitation from God to the people years ago:

“Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters;
and you who have no money, come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost.
Why spend money on what is not bread,
and your labor on what does not satisfy?
Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good,
and you will delight in the richest of fare.
Give ear and come to me; listen, that you may live.”

Apparently the invitation continues because Jesus said,

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,
for I am gentle and humble in heart,
and you will find rest for your souls.
For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

The invitation has been given…

I discovered this great little prayer in my devotional time this morning…maybe you can make it your prayer today also:

“Lord, be gracious to us; we long for you. Be our strength every morning, our salvation in time of distress” (Isaiah 33:2).

May that be our experience today!
