When families can talk about their faith together, good things happen!
Last week, I spoke with a couple from our church. They are long-time Christians who have lived out their faith in their home, community, and church. As we talked, they shared the joy they received over Christmas when they were able to lead their young grandson to the Lord. I was so happy for them. What greater joy can there be than to be able to pass your faith on to your precious children.
Sunday, I spoke with a young single mom. Her life is much different. Her faith is new. But with much determination and awareness of God’s grace in her life, she is seeking to live out her faith before the world and her family. She was very excited and pleased to tell me that she had gone through the salvation book I had given her with her boys.
Two different families, two very different situations, but one passion to reach out to loved ones with the incredible gift of God’s Son, Jesus. What greater joy could a parent or grandparent have!
Remember, good things happen when family members and families come together.
Have a great week, and remember to talk about your faith at home with the ones you love.

Let’s remember to pray for the country and people of Haiti at this time of terrible tragedy. We are formulating a response from SBC that will enable you to help through a Christian organization or through churches within the country. As soon as these options are available, we will announce those in our services and have them available through our web site.

Life Groups begin meeting next week to study The Prodigal God. I have had more feedback from people after watching Timothy Keller tell the story that I am really excited about the opportunity to talk together about the fresh truth of this parable. Most importantly, I’m excited about the application to each one of us.
I am also very excited about the development of new friendships within the Life Groups. It is so essential that we do this life together. If you’re not in a group you can still sign up on Sunday, or call the office and let Lori know of your interest. Please call 532-1381, ext. 116. We also need host homes. If you call Lori and agree to host, it will make her day!
Join me in prayer for our new Life Groups.
Be blessed,
Pastor Rick

Thoughts from Sunday’s message:
Some of us want all the Father’s stuff, and we want the ‘freedom’ to do with it what we want, but we don’t really want the Father. Some of us want all the Father’s stuff, and we want to do with His stuff exactly what he wants us to do, but we don’t really want the Father.
Am I…are we…expecting the Father’s stuff to bear a weight it was never designed to carry. Am I, like those of old, worshipping the creation and not the creator. Are there things I’m trusting that can’t bear the full weight of my soul. In my office, there is an old scale. As we listened to Pastor Tim Keller this past Sunday speak about the Prodigal God, and he specifically hit on this idea that our soul has a certain ‘weight,’ it made me think of my scale. What kinds of things do I put on it, even good things, great things…but not the Father. It is no wonder, in the attempt to find what might help balance the scale, that we wear out friendships, spouses, careers, our families, entertainments, possessions and any other sort of thing we seek to prop up our souls with. It is my prayer that I will learn what it means to desire the Father, to enjoy the relationship the Father desires with me, and to use the Father’s stuff to chase after and bless others.

Happy Tuesday, January 12, 2010…
I just got back from Silver Spur. I had lunch, took a tour, and met with some old and some new friends. Silver Spur is a wonderful Christian campground right here in our own backyard. A little light for Jesus nestled in the foothills, surrounded by the beauty of God’s creation. During this past hour, I have been reminded of the amazing way God works in and through people. Over the years, this camp has been touched by so many people who are willing to serve the Lord. You can see that God has used their efforts in an amazing way. Because they have used their gifts and talents, many people have come to know Jesus.
It is the same at SBC, God wants to use us in amazing ways as we seek to introduce others to His son, Jesus Christ. Whatever our gift or talent might be, he can use you in great ways.
Have a blessed Tuesday, and I pray that you will come to know the blessing of knowing and serving Jesus.

Monday mornings…don’t you love them? They are like a new beginning every seven days. A fresh start in a new week with the potential for adventure and opportunity just on the horizon. It’s so exciting isn’t it?
Well, okay, I admit it, I don’t really embrace Mondays with this kind of excitement and anticipation. It’s not that I don’t look forward to new beginnings, it’s more that I don’t really like to say good-bye to yesterdays, especially if yesterday was a Sunday. And yesterday was!
I am so thankful to be a part of Sierra Bible Church – my life is enriched in so many ways as we reach out to introduce people to Christ and together become more like Him. Really, and yesterday confirmed this.
As the various elements of each service unfolded, it was clear that our church family was engaged. Who couldn’t be when we were challenged with our lostness either as the responsible religious brother or the irresponsible irreligious brother? You know the type because we are the type, we want what the Father has but we don’t really want the Father…and either way we go, we have gone far from home because we have wandered far from Him. But to be reminded that He wants us to come home because He loves us – well, that seems too great a gift. This is what the people in my small group communicated yesterday and communicate everyday in many ways: God loves us so much that He will run out and meet us with an embrace and kiss and all kinds of revelry when we turn toward Him. God wants us home, with Him.
Sundays are so amazing, and this is why I don’t like to say hello to Mondays! But it’s here and no matter what lies ahead, when I trust in Him and surrender to Him then I can say with confidence, “all the way my Savior leads me!”.
Good morning Monday!
Michael

Special thanks to all who gave so generously in December to help our “General” budget, as well as support some of our mission outreaches across the street and around the world.
Our General giving was about 40% over budget with the help of some year-end gifts, and almost $7,000 was given to WATCH for needed tables and chairs through our Christmas Program, and over $10,000 to Hope Of The Nations through the Christmas catalog. Our Community Needs Network continues to minister to people on a daily basis through what so many of our church family provide for those experiencing special needs during this difficult time for many, as well – THANKS!

I covet your prayers for the all-church participation as we study the book, The Prodigal God. I heard Timothy Keller speak on The Prodigal God at Willow Creek Summit this past summer. Out of a dozen speakers, Dr. Keller, by far, was the most compelling. His impact upon me didn’t fade away in days, but instead, continues to impact my life and my tendency to be “pharisaical.”
I hope and pray that our entire church will commit to this series by being here on Sundays and participating in a Life Group, and joining me as we pray for God to use this series in life-changing ways for all of us who call SBC our home.
Blessings

I love relationships. It is a yearly, monthly, weekly, daily goal to be in growing relationships. I do understand that I can’t be in a growing, deepening relationship with everyone – we dare not become vastly wide and minimally deep. I also understand that relationships take cultivation, work, consistency and a bit of ‘luck’ (for lack of a better term).
Last week, we were making a visit to our partner church in Ensenada, Mexico. After getting the 150 SBC donated gifts past over armed guards, settling in with our ministry partners and connecting over the generalities, we set up one of a few meetings to sit face to face and connect regarding life, ministry and anything else. It was at this first meeting that I realized our relationship had changed. In previous meetings, I would say over and over ‘please, tell me what you need, what you want, how we can help.’ Once we had a chance to know these needs, we could see whether or not we could meet them. One of the reasons we have continued to support, encourage, and partner with this church is in the reality that for years they struggled with asking. They were extremely grateful for anything we could do and felt visibly uncomfortable to ask.
As we sat eye to eye on this particular trip and began to talk about ministry and hopes and needs, it was apparent to me that things had changed. Our relationship had changed. Our friends asked. They leaned across the table and said, ‘can you please help us?’ My heart jumped. Not simply to meet their requests but because they had requests, and they had ‘friends’ they were willing to ask.
Might our relationships this coming year experience the blessing of our God. Might they grow in patience, joy and peace. Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!
A brand New Year with brand new opportunities! What an amazing time we live in! What an amazing opportunity God has placed before us!
This week, I had the privilege of leading my first baptism class of 2010 with a family whose two boys attend our Promiseland Sunday morning ministries. I was so blessed to spend time sharing what it means to know and follow Jesus Christ. The children had great questions and were excited about sharing their love and desire to follow Jesus.
What a great opportunity we have, and so many of you have been part of this process and others like it. Thank you for your willingness to be involved in the lives of children and their families.
It is my prayer that each of us will see the many people that God has placed before us. May we be a light in this community that holds up the Word of God each day pointing people to The One who gave His life for us, Jesus.
Enjoy the New Year

Happy New Year!
I hope your new year so far is wonderful…real life hits for us today – kids back in school, back in the office at SBC for me, Mel’s parents to the airport to go back to Ohio, Mel back to work, Mel’s car in the shop for a possible new transmission…Happy Stinkin’ New Year! It’s not that bad really, all things considered.
I so am thankful for my family, my friends, Sierra Bible Church, and all the other “riches” that God has sent my way. Nothing can really overshadow all that He has offered me. That’s why I loved church so much today…it was a good challenge for me to “Reset” my priorities for 2010.
2010 sounds like an exciting year at SBC doesn’t it? More than that, it sounds like an exciting year of covenanting with God to live with Christ-Centered principles as our guide. Our shared moments of worship, baptism, the Word and nailing our covenants to the cross during communion were a significant way of starting off the new decade!
Let’s stick with it family!

Please pray for Pastor Nate and his family as they are in Ensenada helping with outreach at our sister church there. Nate will be involved with preaching, meetings, and a large outreach to the community. Please ask that God would bless their efforts.

Dear Church Family,
Well, the year has come and gone. It’s hard to believe we are about to enter 2010. We have so much to be thankful for. God has provided so much for our personal families as well, as our church family.
We have had the privilege this past year of reaching out to so many children. Some of the children we know, but many are one-time visitors who often come from troubling situations. Being a children’s leader is not always easy, and I know that it takes a loving heart to be here week after week. God knows our leaders commitments, and I believe He is very pleased with their hearts for serving His little ones.
I pray that our coming year will also be a blessing and a tribute to God’s love. I pray that His word will go out without compromise, telling each child and each family that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life.
Thanks for making it a great year in Promiseland!
Because of Jesus,
Becky

I finally got it! After braving a very hectic holiday schedule, after many rehearsals and performances of “Greetings!”, and after dodging the many in my family who got it…I finally got it, too! I finally got my annual winter head cold. Congestion, everything sounding like it’s in a tunnel, cold medicines, vaporizers, malaise, achiness, and a general crabbiness, have all created a very unwelcomed chaos in my life.
And yet, a wonderful holiday season with friends and family, rich and meaningful ministry, basketball games, and a meaningful time of worship & teaching yesterday have all created a very welcomed sense of clarity in my life.
It’s a matter of perspective right?
My prayer for you is that this day will have a clarity to it that brings you to a place of praise!

Being that Christmas is almost upon us, and our office will be closed on Thursday and Friday of this week, we want to wish you all the merriest of Christmases – and we pray for God’s blessings upon you during your time together as families. Remember to keep Christ in the center of all you do!
Have a blessed Christmas!!
Tuesday, December 22, 2009
Merry Christmas to all! What a privilege it is to spend my days working with the children in our church and community. This past Sunday, the children gave a terrific performance telling the wonder of God’s love for each and every one of us. I pray that this Christmas you will truly experience the fullness of life that God has intended for you.
He came to tell us whose we are…
He came to trade dark for light…
He came to mend our broken hearts, that we might come to Him…
He came to make us new inside…
He came to be our sacrifice…
He came to bring eternal life, that we might come to Him…
O come let us adore Him
O come let us adore Him
O come let us adore Him – Christ the Lord
Thank you, Father, for sending your Son. Without His sacrifice there would be no hope, no light, and no eternal life. May we adore You with all of our hearts this Christmas week.

Thanks to all who attended our Christmas Program, ‘Greetings!” May you feel the Lord’s touch this Christmas season.

Christmas…I have been consistently reminded of the meaning of Christmas early this Friday morning. I was preparing for Sunday by putting the last minute touches on the message from Revelation 19-20, reviewing the music and message of our children’s Christmas program “Hurry Christmas” that 80 joyful children will be sharing Sunday morning, and reading through the script of our Christmas play “Greetings!” And I was taken right back to the shocking appearance of the angel to Joseph and his message about the Christmas child: “…they will call Him Immanuel – which means ‘God with us.’”
May that be our experience in many ways this season, through plays, messages, programs – experiencing the truth that, in so many ways and means, God indeed is with us!

H2E in San Francisco and beyond…
I had the privilege to take over 20 students and leaders to the tenderloin district this past weekend as an extension of God’s hands and feet in this world.
Night One:
As we set out, we had no idea what to expect. It had been raining all evening, and it was cold. We were well armed with beanies and scarves knitted by loving hands at SBC. A group of many newcomers hitting the streets at night can be an interesting adventure. His name is Troy. I had not met him before he showed up to load on the bus earlier that afternoon. He is friendly, outgoing and bounces around with a lot of energy like most junior high boys. Unlike most students his age, he was amazing in the inner city. “Would you like a beanie?” “What’s your name?” “How can we pray for you?” “Would you like to get up, and we will pray for you right now?” In over thirty trips to the tenderloin, I can’t remember a more natural, loving, intentional and ‘gifted’ street missionary.
Day Two:
We stood under sun shades as the rain ripped through the park we were preparing our day of services out of. Some stood in the rain, some led music, a pastor stood up to encourage those of us that were willing to come out and serve. I knew something in that moment. I was in the right place. I was right where God wanted me. I can’t tell you how or why I knew, but as I stood there in the middle of our students, praising God and preparing my heart to serve the city…I knew, and it was good.
I have a prayer for us. The first is that we would experience times like ‘Troy in the City.’ Times in which we are natural, loving, intentional and ‘gifted’ missionaries of God’s love to those around us. The second is that you would find yourself ‘there.’ In that spot. In the undeniable will of God…simply serving, knowing and being known.
Merry Christmas,
Pastor Nate

This past Saturday, Children’s Ministries had the unique opportunity to host the California Children’s Services Christmas party.
What a wonderful time we had singing songs, making crafts, eating delicious treats, and of course handing out gifts to some very darling children. It was a privilege to meet parents who have spent many years dealing with their children’s physical and medical needs. I am sure it can be very overwhelming for many of these families, and I am thankful that we could provide Christmas joy during this holiday season.
It was exciting to see the faces of the children light up after they received their gifts from Santa. I was expecting them to tear into packages to see what toy waited inside. Instead, I was surprised to see the children hold them to their chest and take them home to be opened on Christmas day. I never realized that we were providing their main Christmas presents.
I would also like to acknowledge that this project found its start with Father Wolfgang Krismanits. It was his heart’s desire to provide Christmas for medically and physically handicapped children in Tuolumne. I feel we, at Sierra Bible, were privileged to pick up his baton and carry out this tradition for 2009.
I hope you have a wonderful week as you prepare for the Christmas season.

What a weekend!
Two sons on different basketball teams in two tournaments in two different locations, one daughter playing basketball at the fitness center, a family Christmas dinner and party on Saturday, three worship services, and five performances of “Greetings!”.
Christmas peace? Well…
It’s been busy, but a good kind of busy, a fulfilling type of busy – both on the family front and the ministry front.
I am so thankful for the cast and crew of “Greetings!”. Their talent, their dedication, their performance – all such a gift to our community…to me.
The story is a parable really. It’s a story that didn’t happen, but a story that communicates truth. It’s both unreal and reality at once. It’s filled with meaningful and poignant messages, and yet it’s not a sermon. It has a specific message, but an unspecific through line. The audience is listening to the same words, and yet everyone is hearing what they need to. It’s art, but imitates life. It’s theater, but happens in our own families. It’s very well acted, yet completely believable.
It’s something to see. It’s something to experience. It’s something not to miss!
Good thing there are still five more performances…get your tickets fast…they are running out.

“Greetings!” begins tonight – the first of nine performances over the next two weekends! Please be praying for the cast and crew who have worked long and hard to make this an effective outreach to our community this Christmas. If you can attend this weekend, please do so, as the attendance always builds throughout the schedule. I had the privilege of attending the Dress Rehearsal last night, and I can assure you this story will touch people’s hearts deeply as they grapple with how we can experience God in the midst of life’s challenges and hardships. Mixed with lots of humor in this all-too-typical family, the message of Christmas is proclaimed clearly and creatively. See you there!

I am in the midst of preparing for a funeral that I will do Sunday afternoon. The service will be at Foothill Community Church in Angels Camp. This service will be harder than usual. The reason being is that it’s for a long-time friend.
This gentleman, and I choose that word on purpose, this very “gentle man” is a man I greatly respect. I met him 27 years ago on a golf course. We were paired together in a tournament. Playing golf with someone you’ve never met is always an interesting experience. In between shots, you small talk and try to learn something about this stranger you are playing with. I learned very little about this man. What I did learn was that he was a great golfer and a lot of fun to play with.
Over the course of the next 7 to 8 months, we played often. One day, a friend asked me if I knew who my new golfing buddy really was. I told him what I had learned over the last 8 months. He said I was missing key information. He said, “Your new golfing buddy was the founder of PSA Airlines.”
I had never met a person, when given the opportunity to toot their own horn, who didn’t jump at the chance. My friend never promoted himself. He always built other people up.
Do we pass on the opportunity to impress people with our knowledge, our position, and our giftedness? When we meet people, are we more interested in being an encouragement to them? Do we forego applause so that we can be the one clapping?
Sunday afternoon, I will celebrate the truth my friend is now, perhaps, a doorkeeper in Heaven as King David said would satisfy him. I know my friend is way more satisfied. He lived well, prioritizing others above himself.
Pray for me that I will honor his memory without building him up.
Blessings, Pastor Rick

Like a Child
As the snow began to mount around, I hurried my steps as I brought wood inside and checked on the car chains. “Kirah, why are you giggling?” I asked our four year old daughter. “I’m walking on s-n-o-w,” was her seemingly obvious reply. ‘So was I,’ I thought…
In a recent trip to Bend, OR, to visit my brother and family, we were greeted one morning by stunning views of the surrounding mountain peaks. We drove to the top of a lookout and found ourselves talking about how high the mountains were, how far away they actually are, how much fun they would be to climb, the technical aspects of each mountain, records held on certain climbs, the amazing people that climb multiple peaks in a day… From the back seat, Kaylin asked “are those all volcanoes?” “Yes” we answered, continuing to dream about one day spending some time among them. “Wouldn’t it be cool if they all exploded at one time?” Kaylin thought out loud. “But instead of lava and ash they blew streamers and confetti?” Hmmm…like a child.
Do you need some help seeing the world around you from the eyes of a child? Christmas is a season that in some ways is best experienced from this perspective. Might the God who showed up like a child bestow upon you this season a child-like hope, joy, love and peace. Merry Christmas!
Nate

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble.
But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
-John 16:33
We lose perspective on what’s really important. Our cultural Christmas is a good example of that. Look around…the sights and sounds of the season are everywhere. But where is Jesus? We are told that he is the reason for the season, but how focused on him are we? Are the trappings of the secular celebration distracting us? Are our own difficult circumstances blinding us?
Or, are the difficulties of our lives focusing us on the Christ of Christmas more intently than ever before? It sure seems that way for Kathy Holmes, Heidi Patterson & Gill McKee, all who shared their stories of being overcomers in the middle of difficulty. Their faith in Christ filled me. And the purpose they have found in their difficulty encourages me.
Let’s all be overcomers!

Sunday morning, we get to hear the stories of Heidi Patterson, Kathy Holmes, and Gill McKee about how God is still actively changing lives…through the Christ of Christmas! This is a great reminder to be praying for our Greetings! cast and crew that will again this year share creatively and convincingly how God is still doing the work of changing lives through His Son Jesus.

I listened yesterday to one of the Community Needs Network workers. She shared her morning meeting with people. She listened to them, prayed with them, and watched them shop. She was busy, she was challenged by the needs, she made new friends, she made a difference, and she cried tears of thanksgiving.
This is the ministry Jesus has called all of us to. Inasmuch as we do it to the least of these our brothers and sisters, we do it to Him.
If you would like to work one morning a week or even one morning a month, we’d love to have you join us. We specifically could use men who would be available. What a privilege it is to do something that we know brings joy to our Savior.
Grateful,
Pastor Rick

Are you looking for proof? Do you really want to know if you love those around you with the ‘kind’ of love God loves? Am I, and are you, responding to those around with Covenant love, grace-filled love, Christ-like love?
Here it is…gratitude. Simple thankfulness. I think it might be that simple, at least in one degree, and certainly not all degrees. Am I thankful? Sure I’m thankful for the big things, the peculiar and personal things, but am I thankful for the simple and small?
I have come to the awareness that I’m not, at least not much, at least not to the degree that would in any way prove to me, or them for that matter, that I genuinely love the way God loves – or worse yet have any understanding of God’s love. I have come to the awareness that I must find a new category for the expectations I have of others if I am going to be genuinely thankful. I have come to the awareness that I need a fresh sense of God’s love for me if I am going to be genuinely thankful. I have come to the awareness that this needs to change…

Happy December 1st!
It’s that time of the year! We pull out the decorations, begin making our lists, and filling up all of our days and even the hours of our calendar. So many things to do, so many people to shop for, only so much time and often not enough money. Ready or not…the countdown is officially on.
It is my prayer that, in the midst of all of our busyness, we will not miss the small and daily opportunities God places in our lives. Look for the little things – they often make the biggest difference!
May God bless you each day as you prepare for the season.

The world we live in can be a distracting place! That’s an understatement isn’t is? It is difficult to live above the fray and live in God’s purpose…his purpose for us of living as Kingdom builders.
But there is hope! The hope is the end of the story. I enjoyed how Haley Hohengarten put it yesterday in her spoken word poem, “The Epic Battle”…
“The Epic Battle”
By Haley Hohengarten
The kingdom of heaven is near
We hear God’s kingdom will soon be here
His kingdom come, once His will’s done
We’ll sing in reverent fear
But it’s clear this fight keeps raging on, from dusk to dawn
From right to wrong
Through night light strikes war wages on
Stages of darkness parade upon
Lands where evil hands take and bond so long ago
Began this battle of dark and light
Satan’s breath spread far and wide
He’s still alive
His shadows flash across sunlight
They clash with souls that hold so tight
To the light of the one Who’s still to come
He sent His son one conflict won
Though Jesus rose, no war is done
More war to come until He comes
But until then we shall not run
For where there are hearts dimmed dark
Much brighter shines each tiny spark
That grows with hope glowing in hearts
Showing dim hearts we’re set apart
Arms of hate replaced by grace
Let love trace this world, this place
In face of evil, in the eyes of sin
We must not give up we must not give in
Fight doubt from outside looking in
Off sidelines fly in bright shining
Like stars set apart darks skies lining
Live present tense I’m reminding
The gift of life eternal’s glimpse
In distant seas we’ll be with Him
Until then live unto Him
Forever glory reigning in Him
Story from beginning to end
The good news is
Our
God
Wins
Have a great week!

Happy Thanksgiving, Friends!
I am thankful for sunshine and rain, abundant food, a comfortable home, and my loving family that is growing! Did you know we are having our 3rd baby grandchild this summer! How blessed we are. I am also thankful for the many friends that come into our lives! How rich they make it. We can share a meal, share our joys and even share what breaks our heart. God has blessed us.
What I am blessed with most at Sierra is the amazing number of volunteers that God has given us! Each week, the halls and rooms of Promiseland are filled with leaders giving from a heart of love. I am thankful for you.
With this, I share the words of Paul, “I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now.” I pray this for you as well, as together we serve Christ by sharing the gospel with the children and families at Sierra Bible.
Have a joyful week and many blessings this Thanksgiving,
Becky

As you know, Christmas is right around the corner; and that means our production of “Greetings!” is, too.
I would like to request prayer support for our Christmas Outreach production cast and crew. Could you please ask for protection from spiritual and physical attack against the cast as they are in rehearsals over the next couple of weeks, and then for the cast and crew during the performances? The cast members are: Michelle Woodall, Madilyn Wold, Robbie Smittle, Frank Silva and Deb Albrecht. The crew members are: Michael Ludlum and April Wold. The technicians are: Steve Wilson, Randy Richter and Sarah Robertson & Joanna Hobbs.

One of the joys of ministry is the privilege of sharing in and celebrating the ministries of others. One way we do that at SBC is through various church family members being involved in ministering to the needs of orphans around the world.
Tim and Kathy Atchley just returned from orphanage work in the Philippines. They shared last Sunday, with passion and tears, the joys of a recent trip. Pat Day leads an organization called ROR (Russian Orphan Rescue). I just returned from a Board meeting, and rejoice in the lives that are being supported through this outreach. Many of our church family have worked personally at For His Children in Ecuador. All of these groups are planning further ministry in 2010 that we are invited to participate in also! This, the Bible says, is “the religion that God accepts” (James 1:27). I hope you will share the joy of celebrating what God is doing, and maybe next year being His hands and feet in this “true religion” somewhere in our world.

I have been occupied with my preaching task out of the Book of Revelation. I have been reading chapters 6-10 which contain a description of what is commonly referred to as the Tribulation. This is a 7-year period that contains the opening of 7 seals that contain 7 trumpets that will lead to 7 bowls of wrath that is poured out on the earth.
It is most interesting to read but very complicated to understand. It is interesting to read the commentaries on these verses because you can probably find a commentary that tells you what you want to believe. I personally am pre-tribulation, which is the perspective that I’ll be raptured out of this world before the hard stuff takes place.
The bottom line of the focus of the sermon on Sunday will be that there is a judgment for believers, and the way we live now on this earth will one day be judged by Christ. It has caused me to think a whole lot more about eternity, and to let that thinking affect my life here and now.
Please pray for me for Sunday that I reflect the heart of Jesus and the truths He wants us to know. You can also pray during the sermon, but keep your eyes and ears open.
See you on Sunday!
Blessings,
Pastor Rick

If you really want to criticize me, criticize my performance. Attack my effort and my desire, and you will have quite effectively attacked me at the core. You can say, ‘don’t take it personal’ or ‘this isn’t meant to be personal’… but IT will be. And I will gladly take IT that way, run with IT, keep myself up at night with IT, beat myself sick with IT, and (like a dog to his vomit) return to IT again in the morning. Don’t get me wrong – I don’t like it this way. I have often prayed that I would be different, thicker skinned or something…but that simply doesn’t seem to be me.
Me. I get my feelings hurt, and I think I’m beginning to like it that way. Did you know that ‘nothing’ can ‘make’ you feel a certain way – it is in some way a choice, it is under our control or lack thereof.
I have obsessed (or meditated) of late about ‘freedom in Christ.’ The little book that Paul wrote to the church in Galatia has absolutely captured me. I didn’t know why until recently writing out some thoughts in a journal. On the one hand, I felt very much under attack with regards to my performance…on the other…God was bringing me to a well of his truth and asking me to drink. Drink of His life and love and freedom that is in no way connected to my performance, my effort, or my desire. Drink, drink, drink until the question marks of your performance are satisfied…then come drink again.

Dear God,
As you draw me ever deeper into your heart,
I discover that my companions on the journey are women and men
Loved by you as fully and as intimately as I am.
In your compassionate heart, there is a place for all of us.
No one is excluded.
Give me a share in your compassion, dear God, so that your unlimited love may become visible in the way I love my brothers and sisters.
-With Open Hands
Thank you, Jesus…

“Twenty-four elders with white robes & gold crowns, what’s that about?”
“What’s with the creatures with eyes all around their heads that see everything?”
“‘God in a nimbus of emerald.’ Really?”
All questions I heard asked yesterday after our look into the 4th & 5th chapters of Revelation. The symbolism and figurative language is confusing enough to make you skeptical and intriguing enough to make you want to know more. And yet, does it really matter? Does it really matter if we know what it means? My answer is “no” & “yes”.
The “no”: Many people take the language of Revelation and ascribe meaning to it with an absolute and dogmatism that really can’t be that certain. There is some symbolism that can be understood and some that really can’t. Rather than spend a lot of time, energy and judgment on the stuff that ’s hard to figure out, we should camp on what is certain.
Here is what’s certain, the “yes”: Pastor Mark answered the question our current series “Revelation – What’s this world coming to?” asks: it’s coming to a time when all creation will give honor and praise to God as they serve and glorify Him who redeemed them.” And that’s clear.
We don’t have to wait until we die to enter into the song of salvation – the eternal song of praise; it’s a song we can sing now, it’s a song we should be singing now to those who are far from God.
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty
Who was, and is, and is to come!” -Revelation 4:8b
“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain
To receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength
And honor and glory & praise!” -Revelation 5: 12
So sing away, and make a difference in your family, in your work place, in your community and around the world by giving praise and glory to God!

Sunday was another busy day with our children. The day was filled with tons of ministry and, sandwiched in the middle, was rehearsal for our children’s Christmas program.
At 3:30 in the afternoon, 86 boys and girls came to be part of our “Hurry Christmas” children’s musical. The kids came early to try out for small speaking and singing parts. They were all precious and all special! As I listened to them sing, I felt surrounded by angels. I don’t mean the children who we often call angels but “heavenly angels”. I know this sounds silly, but this is what I felt; and it was a very holy moment as all of the kids clustered around. Some were singing, some were goofing off and many were wishing for a special part. It was as if the angels were listening with amazement as the children prepared! I’m sure they were.
Enjoy your day and please pray for us we continue to prepare for Christmas.

Another great Sunday of worship!
I was so much looking forward to Sunday…maybe too much, because I looked at the clock every hour all through the night until finally I just got up. There was a lot to look forward to – seeing my church family, worshipping together through music, getting our “Faith in Action” update, and hearing from Harold and Coni Knepper about their outreach in Kigoma on the continent of Africa. So, I am glad I didn’t sleep through my alarm after all that anticipation.
I really enjoyed my day. I was most challenged in the morning by something that Harold said in his mini-sermon. He was talking about how we surrender to God, how we say we want to follow him but how we often avoid eye-contact with him (like a student avoiding a teacher’s glance in an effort to not be called on) for fear he might call on us to do something that we just don’t really want to do. And all of that after singing songs of surrender in our worship set.
I had a heart-to-heart moment with God as a result! I also reflected more on the lyrics of “Arms Open Wide” by Hillsong United. Maybe you will want to, too!
“ARMS OPEN WIDE”
Take my life I lay it down
At the cross where I am found
All I have I give to You oh God
Take my hands and make them clean
Keep my heart in purity
That I may walk in all You have for me
Oh here I stand
Arms open wide
Oh I am Yours
And You are mine
Take my moments and my days
Let each breath that I take
Be ever only for You oh God
My whole life is Yours I give it all
Surrendered to Your Name
And forever I will pray
Have Your way
Have Your way

We are excited to have Harold and Coni Knepper with us this weekend. Their daughter, Amy, with quiet and bed rest, is still holding that new little one inside to grow some more (PTL!), so Harold and Connie felt free to leave Iowa and join us for a couple of weeks. Be sure and come Sunday morning to hear a little of their story, and take advantage of one of their many other meetings with folks to get better acquainted!

May I ask you to pray? This weekend, I have the privileged opportunity to teach on the marriage relationship at Silver Spur’s annual couples conference. Here is how I would like you to pray:
- First, for the presence and the power of the Holy Spirit.
- Second, for a conviction of the Holy Spirit in areas where couples need work.
- Third, that I might speak out of the heart of Jesus for these couples.
- Fourth, that the enemy, who revels in unhealthy marriages, would be silenced and prohibited from interfering with the work of the Holy Spirit.
- Finally, for husbands and wives who don’t know Jesus to come to a place of transforming faith.
May God’s will be done, and might He answer your prayers!
Thanks,
Pastor Rick

Sunday morning, I was blessed as I listened to one mom who came in to thank one of our small group leaders for leading her daughter to Jesus. She expressed her thankfulness for the love that was given to her 5th grade daughter and, more importantly, that her daughter realized the meaning of salvation from her time spent in the Sunday morning small group. What an amazing opportunity our small group leaders have, and here at Sierra Bible we have so many wonderful leaders. We never know when one life will be touched for eternity. I do pray that each of us will realize the awesome privilege God has given to us. We get to be part of His eternal plan!
Have a great day, and I hope you have the opportunity to share Jesus with someone today!

“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.”
Revelation 3:20
Are you hot, cold or lukewarm?
These are challenging words from yesterday’s message by Pastor Rick. And, they are words that should question us each day as we consider whether or not we are living a life that proclaims the lordship of Jesus Christ. Perhaps several other questions would sharpen our sensitivities to how we are living this week as well:
Are you hungry and thirsty for all that is right in God?
Do you want him and his kingdom more than anything else?
Do you believe that he is inviting you into his work of making things right?
Are you hot, cold or lukewarm? Only you can answer this!

The results are in! Our R2R (Recycle To Reclaim) Faith In Action project exceeded our goal of 50,000 quarts of clean water with the bottles and cans brought last Sunday to Trunk Or Treat – thanks! Harold and Coni Knepper are on their way to Sonora, and we will have the privilege of presenting them with this gift for clean water in Tanzania.

It was 5 PM Friday afternoon when the men started arriving at Silver Spur Christian Camp for the annual men’s conference. The band was already practicing in the gathering hall with Derek Maxson on acoustical guitar, Roland Frank on bass guitar, Adam Miller on electrical guitar, and Michael Parker on drums.
The camaraderie was apparent as people were greeting each other and finding their rooms. At 6:30pm, we gathered in front of the dining hall and prayed that God would do something special in our lives that weekend. We prayed that our relationship with Him might be strengthened, and our relationship with each other might be enjoyed.
The food was incredible! Every meal was a feast worthy of a men’s conference.
Friday night, Rocky, our friend and leader, shared the personal story of his life. From All-American at “Old Miss” in football to a contract to play pro, to his encounter with Christ and his calling to influence men to follow Christ.
Saturday morning, Rocky taught us that God knows and cares deeply for us. In the third session, Rocky taught us that God is willing; and in the fourth session, he taught us that God is able to transform our lives.
After an afternoon of fun and games and another terrific meal, we gathered around the bonfire and shared our hurts, hopes, dreams and our needs. Then men prayed for men, and Jesus blessed us all.
Sunday morning, Rocky led us to the table…the table of self-examination…with the question, “What price are we willing to pay?” Communion became a very sensitive and sacred time to affirm our confidence in Christ and our determination to be Christ-followers.
After a lot of hugging and pats on the back and expressions of thankfulness, we took our sleeping bags and headed to our cars knowing God had answered our prayers.
Blessings,
Pastor Rick

As you probably remember (or may not), Sunday’s sermon was titled ‘Encouragement for Tough Times’ and was a sermon reinforcing the promises of Jesus. It struck me as I was reflecting on those words and verses that I, and maybe we, more often need to live into these promises in the Good Times. Call it privilege or blessing or luck, but I seem to have far more good times than tough ones; and it is in those moments that more often than not, I can find myself glorying in MY successes and MY ability to do what is right and MY sovereignty or the way I have conquered my enemies and… I’m guessing you get the point. There is a crossroad in every situation, good or tough. I think I am much more apt to run to God in tough times. I’ve always been a much better pray-er when things are seemingly unraveling or running out of MY control. The Spirit of God reminded me after Sunday’s words that I need to constantly HOLD FAST to the promises of Jesus in every time – good, tough and those in between.
Please pray with me for the 23 girls that are headed to Hume Lake this weekend for the all-girls conference titled ‘Made.’ It should be a wonderful time of renewal and encouragement. Pray that the girls will listen as God Speaks.

Each day, thoughtless careless acts are done to the most innocent in this world, our children. Each day, the lives of voiceless children are taken before they are able to be born. Each day, children are pushed to grow up in a fast-paced society that puts priority on adulthood.
I personally am thankful that our Father in heaven does not see it this way. His heart is with the children. His angels are with the children.
It is my prayer that we at Sierra Bible will continue to nurture our precious little children. Cherish their childhood, and guide them to a loving Savior.
Have a good Tuesday – Becky

And so, the message yesterday was about “holding on”. So much comes against us and so much wars for the priorities of our hearts. We were reminded yesterday of our need to remain faithful to God’s call in our lives to be people who love him and love others. That is his purpose for us. It’s not always easy but he is always faithful.
A recently recorded song by MercyMe called “Keep Singing” may offer some words of encouragement to you today!
“Keep Singing”
By MercyMe
Another rainy day
I can’t recall having sunshine on my face
And all I feel is pain
And all I wanna do is walk out of this place
But when I am stuck and I can’t move
When I don’t know what I should do
When I wonder if I’ll ever make it through
I gotta keep singing
I gotta keep praising Your name
You’re the one that’s keeping my heart beating
I gotta keep singing
I gotta keep praising Your name
That’s the only way that I’ll find healing
And can I climb up in Your lap
I don’t wanna leave
Jesus sing over me
I gotta keep singing
Can I climb up in Your lap
I don’t wanna leave
Jesus sing over me
Oh You’re everything I need
And I gotta keep singing

Tonight, 50 SBC men gather at Silver Spur for our weekend retreat. Many of us do this with last year’s gathering still fresh in our mind when God broke into an otherwise nice situation and made it moving and significant, way beyond our plans and anything we imagined. Some of the fruit of those campfire moments we are still celebrating today! PRAY for our men that God’s presence will again be experienced in powerful and personal ways this weekend.

They got it in a way I wish I did.
In a time of reading this morning, I came across a simple phrase that Luke used to introduce a teaching illustration of Jesus. He states that Jesus told them this story to remind them to be in ‘constant prayer.’ This phrase hit me, and I looked up and looked in, reminded. As I stared at the table with my Bible on it and my to do list, I was painfully reminded that I’m way more accustomed to working on my ‘to do’ list than I am my ‘prayer’ list. My first thought was, “well, I know they weren’t all that great at it either” – as was preached on Sunday, they “fell asleep” during times when Jesus had specifically requested that they pray. Then, I thought about Acts Chapter 1, when Luke says “they (the sleepy believers) met together and devoted themselves to prayer.’”
Might God wake us up in the area and priority of prayer.

This past Sunday, I had the opportunity to talk with our parents about the awesome privilege we have to teach our children prayer. We spoke of teaching them to pray, as well as learning to daily bless our children before the Lord.
As a parent and now a grandparent, I realize that we are the model of how to do this communication thing! How to talk the Father and how to have a relationship with the one who loves them the most, Jesus. Wouldn’t it be great if every child would be able to run to their heavenly Father with their needs and run with their praise? Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we were in the habit of blessing one another each day? Our children will be able to best do this if they see us talking to the Father and hear us blessing one another.
“I can pray,” said my child, “Anywhere I am, even riding on my bike without my hands!”
Little girl, if you believe that then you have learned a lesson well,
And God will ride with you and walk with you and dance with you and smile!
There you go – Spinning cartwheels
There you go – With a giggle and a prayer,
Walking with Jesus on a day that isn’t Sunday, in a place that isn’t special, in your grubby jeans and tangled wind tossed hair.
Lord, I’m so glad my child doesn’t need some formal kind of prayer.
She’s learned to talk with you while standing on her head,
She’s learned to feel you near while doing cartwheels in the air. (God is a Verb, Marilee Zdenek)
Have a Blessed Day,
Becky

“To become a fully devoted follower of Christ”…that’s our goal, right? At least, that’s what we were challenged with yesterday…and a challenge it is.
It’s a hard priority to live out, especially because there is so much that distracts us. And yet it is possible to live fully dedicated to Christ and to watch what he does with that dedication.
Once such example? Hector Lozano! Here is a man that in so many ways is unremarkable (sorry Hector!)…and yet, because he was obedient and stepped into the God-provided opportunities in his life, he is being used in remarkable ways. His words “I just showed up and God did the rest” should be a goal for all of us.
God has a plan for us, he’s waiting, he’s willing to use us…but we need to show up!

People look at me strangely when I say I prefer doing a funeral than a wedding. “You’re the ‘Heaven Now’ guy! So a wedding ought to be your favorite!”
I certainly do enjoy weddings; although, sometimes I wonder how real they are. People dress up in costumes, say their lines, and rush to the reception. Funerals are different. Funerals are very somber. They make you think. Everyone knows that they, too, will come this way one day. I wonder what they will say about me.
I was privileged to do a funeral this past week. A wonderful lady died of colon cancer in her early 50’s. Family and friends gathered. She was highly admired and deeply loved. An opening prayer, a passage of scripture, a lot of music, wonderful tributes, and then a challenge.
When the service was over and we were back at the family’s home, the younger brother of the deceased pulled me aside. With tears in his eyes, he said to me, “Rick, our Dad, who has never ever believed there was a God in spite of my continual discussions with him, hugged me today with tears in his eyes and said, ‘Son, I now believe in God!’”
A funeral or a wedding? I love doing weddings, but I treasure funerals.

Looking at Kathy this morning, I said, “I feel like I need a vacation.” The comment came after reviewing my upcoming day that would include a couple of meetings that would require me to be very sensitive, to listen and to respond lovingly… The comment came after thinking through with her how we would best review the Sunday message of sexual purity with our High School group tonight with a kind of salt honesty and light clarity… I guess it isn’t so much that I need a vacation as to step into the Kingdom work that God is doing around here with a renewed sense of his strength, guidance and love. Maybe this short note is an encouragement to you to ’step in’. Maybe it is my prayer that I would ’step in’. May we together, as the bride and body of Jesus Christ, live this day in his Spirit, represent his heart and step into the opportunities before us with his Love.

It’s Tuesday, and I will be spending my day working on the childrens Promiseland lesson for the coming week. Our children have been studying the book of Revelation each week in Promiseland.
At first, I was excited about bringing Jesus’ special letters to the churches into our childrens lives…but then I wondered, “How can I write this for kids?” or even, “Why am I trying to write this for children?” Believe me, the material is not in your average child’s curriculum, I’ve looked. But here we are halfway through the letters to the churches, and it has been an interesting journey for me to see the first three chapters through the eyes of children.
This week, we will look at the church at Sardis. They were an interesting group of people who were known for their ability to dye cloth and turn gold and silver into coins. Their reputation for fine craftsmanship and wealth was known throughout the world at that time. But God knew something else about these people. He knew that even though they attended a church they were not acting like followers of Christ. When Jesus saw the people of this church, he said it was like looking at people with soiled clothes. His letter encouraged the followers to repent because he would be coming back. Jesus promised a white robe for all of those who were found living a life that was pleasing and glorifying to God.
I am reminded that God is not impressed with my talents. What He wants is my heart, a heart that is fully committed to following Him. I’m hoping to receive one of Jesus’ white robes, and I know you are too.

We are taught from the beginning of our lives to never let people see our “dirty laundry”, and so we learn how to get through life by masking all of those things that would make us look bad to people. But who are we kidding, right? We know how dirty we really are, and we don’t have to stretch the imagination too much to guess what other people are hiding.
So, where does this leave us?
Hopefully, it leads us to “true confessions” with our God who loves us, forgives us, restores us, and renews us. Nothing like a little confession to free the soul…and that’s what impressed me most about how God moved yesterday. There were true confessions and many decisions to be pure before the Lord.
A word of hope from a lyric by Tommy Walker:
“You are brighter than my darkest night,
Stronger than my toughest fight,
Just one touch from you my King, my Friend
And I’ll never be the same again”
Let’s pray for a touch from Him on this Monday!

Our small group has been going through the book The Prodigal God by Tim Keller. It takes a deeper look at the context and message of the story of that is commonly called The Prodigal Son. Although…it really is a story of two brothers, both lost, with one coming home and the other left outside.
The chapter called “Redefining Lostness” really affected me deeply as I read it last week. It talks about the fact that both brothers in the story were lost, but in different ways. The older brother stayed home and yet, at the end of the story, was left outside the party. This was his choice. Who is Jesus referring to here? The Pharisees? The established religious people of the day? Those that are today’s believers in the church? The answer, I believe, is yes to all. What is the elder brother spirit that Jesus was warning us about?
How many people have you met that reach a point in their lives where they look around and are disappointed by the position, possessions, or people in their lives? They often blame God because they feel that He owes them more than they have. God has become their business partner in life. By this, I mean that moral living, church involvement, good deeds in Jesus name, tithing, etc., means God owes me a reasonably comfortable life. When life doesn’t go that way, elder brothers often become angry and resentful of God. At the other extreme are younger brother types, who don’t ever feel that they can live up to God’s moral standards and begin to hate themselves. Both are outside God’s plan for us. The parable leaves us hanging with the father asking the elder brother to come into the party.
Wait though…there is good news! Jesus came to show us a better way. He emptied himself of his glory and became a servant and was obedient even to death on the cross. If you see any of these elder brother tendencies in yourself, look to Jesus. He is our True Elder Brother. He wants you at the party.

I am really looking forward to the new ministry that is being developed to equip people to pray for one another. It seems to me if someone comes to church with a need, a heavy heart, a struggle, or any other need for prayer, we ought to have people available to do just that – PRAY.
I am thrilled that Mike and Carla Vroman have agreed to lead this ministry. They will be holding a training seminar on Saturday, October 17, from 9:00 am- 2:30pm in the Lower Portable. If you have a soft heart for people in need, if you love to pray or would love to learn to pray, this just might be for you.
It’s not too late to be a part of this ministry. Call either me or Lori at 532-1381 to be included in this training. If, for whatever reason, this ministry is not for you, I would ask you to help us by simply praying for us.
Thanks for your help,
Pastor Rick

Psalm 8
O LORD, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory
above the heavens.
From the lips of children and infants
you have ordained praise [b]
because of your enemies,
to silence the foe and the avenger.
When I consider your heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
What is man that you are mindful of him,
the son of man that you care for him?
You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings [c]
and crowned him with glory and honor.
You made him ruler over the works of your hands;
you put everything under his feet:
all flocks and herds,
and the beasts of the field,
the birds of the air,
and the fish of the sea,
all that swim the paths of the seas.
O LORD, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
It is amazing that God is mindful of us. We are just a small town in the foothills of California and yet we are so blessed. I am also thankful for the children and the many leaders that came forward to work with these precious kids during our Sunday evening Awana and Breakout. This past Sunday was our first small group night, and it was awesome. If your child missed, be sure to bring them next Sunday night at 5:00. It’s going to be a great year filled with God’s blessings.
Have a terrific week!

This reading from worship on Sunday impressed me…might you be impressed today too!
So, how are you doing? How have you been revealing your faith in Christ in “salt & light” ways? Do your words and actions point people to the love and salvation of Christ?
Or are you like so many others? You know…a “do as I say, not as I do” Christ-follower; one of those whose actions contradict words.
It’s a compromise really. Compromise is tip-toeing right to the edge of danger.
Are you making yourself vulnerable to suspicion & scandal?
Do you lie or stretch the truth?
Do you watch things you know you shouldn’t?
- On the big screen?
- On television?
- The internet?
Do you take cash under the table and never report it?
Do you turn a blind eye to those in need?
Do you remain silent when you should speak up?
- For the innocent?
- For the helpless?
- For the truth?
Do you flirt with a relationship that you shouldn’t?
Do you have one too many drinks?
Do you leave behind your patience and kindness when you walk through your front door?
- Yell at your wife?
- Ignore your husband?
- Brow-beat your kids?
Do you say you’ll stop but never do?
Do you say you’ll start and never do?
As Christ-followers, there is no room for hypocrisy and moral impurity. Standing firm against the strong pressures and temptations of society is never easy, but the alternative is deadly.
Compromise…
Our integrity has to be in Christ. We can’t rely on ourselves; we have to look to him.
That our lives might point people to you Jesus… Be our strength, that we might bless you!

I was so taken by Stephanie & Matt Frediani on Sunday morning as they shared their journey into the Foster Care System.
I would assume that most people are not aware that in my pre-ministry life I was responsible for overseeing the Child Welfare System in the state of Rhode Island. The inadequacies of the Child Welfare System drove me out of that position. I cried as I listened to Matt & Stephanie – for the solution to a distorted system is healthy families that will rescue lost children.
Ever since I have been here at Sierra Bible Church, I have been captivated by the thought that SBC and its families could make Tuolumne County the best place in the Country to be a foster care child.
There will be an informational meeting about foster care in October, watch the bulletin for information or call Lori at the church office- 532-1381, ext 116. If the Lord tugs on your heart as He did mine, why don’t you join us at that meeting and let’s see what God would want to do.
I’ll see you there.
Blessings,

There are times when it all ‘has’ to make sense.
Sitting across the table from a good friend this morning, in whom I have at most levels very little in common, I was reminded that it does make sense. The Gospel that is. God’s restorative mission, his forward love, unconditional grace and invitation to play our part. Tonight, I will speak to about 50 or 60 High School students…they will have to listen…they will get what I have prepared…I won’t fake my thoughts but I could, I could probably convince most of them of something I myself am not convinced of…I could be fake. Not this morning. Not sitting eye to eye and heart to heart with a very sharp High School Senior over breakfast. Everything in his eyes is wanting to know if this is real, if it makes sense. Does it make sense when we talk about family, future, sports, homosexuality, abortion and peace? Does it make sense…yes, indeed it does.

What a privilege it is to serve our Creator and God. He loved us so much that He provided a way for each of us to have access to His loving arms. He has given us the opportunity to run to him in prayer with our joys and sorrows, questions and fears. He has given us His word to find rest and comfort for our daily needs.
Sunday began as a typical day of ministry with many children in Promiseland kids building. Our lesson’s focus was for children to know that God has given us the Bible so we can know the truth about His love. In the midst of my lesson, a ten-year old child spoke up and said, “Our family has given up on God”, and she proceeded to tell us the many reasons for her young, but very real, pain.
Hearing her words saddened my heart and I wondered, “How can I respond and more importantly how does Christ want me to respond.” It was then a privilege to share with her the blessings that come from knowing Jesus and the assurances we can find from His word.
Heb. 5:12 – “God’s word is alive and power…”
God’s word is real for this child!
Heb 5:16 – “We can come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.”
God cares about this child’s hurt and needs.
Please be praying for the needs of our children. Pray that God will enable us to love them and guide them to His loving arms.

“I know your afflictions and your poverty-yet you are rich!” Revelation 2:9
Is it possible to hold our hardships as treasures to be used by God for his glory? It seems that it was for the church in Smryna and for those who were being persecuted because they wouldn’t denounce their faith in Christ.
And it seems true for Gil Wesson, Tessa Zertuche-Thomas & Ron Hamilton, all who shared their “challenging hardship” stories in church yesterday. I so appreciate their hearts, words, and examples of finding God’s purpose even in the most difficult of circumstances.
For me, I am humbled. My hardships pale in comparison to many, and yet I heard the message loud and clear that my pain can be surrendered to God for his glory. It was a privilege for me to share this experience with the many people who went to the green room after the services for prayer. And, for specific prayer that God would use their difficult situation with “redemptive” purpose.
Perhaps that’s what this Monday can be all about…seeking God and asking him to use whatever difficulty may come our way, for his glory!

Here are some fun numbers to report: Our first “Recycle To Reclaim” Sunday brought in enough donations to provide 10, 160 quarts of clean water! Remember to bring your recyclable cans and bottles – and we’ll turn them into clean water in Tanzania, Africa. One can=5 cents=1 quart. I tried it this week, and it works! Join us in Recycle to Reclaim.

I am thankful that my church family was able to hear and hopefully be blessed by Doug Stevens. Thank you to all of you who made comments to me about enjoying him and to many of you who came to Doug.
Sunday afternoon as we talked, he was very moved by our worship, very impressed with our people and very excited about this coming Saturday to do “The Radical Affirmationist.” There is still room if you are able to come on Saturday. Whether you are a part of the seminar, or not, I would appreciate the prayers of our church family for this event.
Thank you for your kindness to me and the extension of that kindness to Doug.
Blessings,
Pastor Rick

Hi, this is Becky – and I am just thankful for the awesome group of leaders God has blessed our ministry with. Sunday nights in Promiseland this fall will be a fun and exciting place to be. I was blessed and excited by our leadership team that met this past Sunday evening. Forty to fifty committed Christ-following adults and teens came together as we geared up for our Cubbie, Sparks and Breakout season that will begin on October 4th.
Our awesome leaders came away excited and ready to reach out to children in our community with the gospel of Jesus Christ. We are also challenged by the opportunity to guide and encourage the growth of their faith and young walk with the Lord. Of course, the leaders are also going to have a blast each week because Kids Ministries is a blessing and Kids Ministries is fun.
Thanks you, God, for your precious gifts and for incredible opportunities to serve you!

Yesterday was a highpoint in leading worship for me. During third service, I became increasingly more overwhelmed by the praises of our church family. During the third worship song (“You Alone”), I couldn’t even sing anymore because I was too emotional. The church family was so engaged in worship and singing so loudly…”You are the only one I need…” that I just had to worship in silence. In every way, the church family became the worship leader, leading me to a place of honest connection with the only One I need! So thanks…and may your Monday be like my Sunday!
“You are the only One I need
I bow all of me at Your feet
I worship You alone!”

Yesterday, I had the privilege of meeting with a newer family at SBC. They shared that in response to a recent message, they had reconciled with a sister that they had not talked to in 22 years! Now they are enjoying each other’s homes and company. May we all be peacemakers like Jesus!

When we look back over our lives most of our friendships have a beginning and an end. Circumstances, job changes, etc… separate us from friends, and we just lose touch.
I have a friend I met years ago in Rhode Island at Barrington College. He was teaching Youth Ministry. He and I connected and found we had much in common. We went in different directions for a few years, and then found ourselves both pastoring in the Evangelical Covenant Church. I was in Arnold, and he was in Walnut Creek, California. As a result, our friendship grew. I remember sitting with Doug at Willow Creek while Bill Hybels challenged us in the ministry. It was a powerful challenge; and I turned and looked at Doug with tears in my eyes, and he looked at me with tears in his eyes, which solidified our friendship. We have the same heart for ministry, the church, and for Jesus.
I’m so thankful that Doug will be preaching this Sunday morning here at Sierra Bible Church. I’m also thrilled he will be leading us on Saturday, September26th in the seminar, “The Radical Affirmationist”. I encourage you to be a part of this seminar. Don’t miss the blessing!

Where: Pinecrest Lake
Weather: 65 F, light breeze, partly cloudy
When: 3 PM, September 13th, 2009
What: Baptism
Rays of light leapt from amid the ominous, swirling clouds. Wind, ripping at times, shook the tall pines and floated across the rippled water and into the walls of granite. Creation…dancing, proclaiming, portraying, cheering, broken, slowing, quiet, still… “Why are you being baptized today?” The question was asked over thirty times. “I’m all in, I’m living for Jesus, I’m His and not mine, I can’t do this on my own, in obedience, in celebration, in response to the life laid down for me – I am here today to, in some profound and concrete way, lay my own life down that you might know that what God did through Jesus 2000 years ago He did for me!!!”
Under the chilling water they went. Couples, children, students, long time believers, new converts, drug addicts, moms, brothers, friends, husbands…children of the Living God, they took a breath, leaned back and let go.
In my experience there is a moment just about here. Not a long pause or a drawn out thought, but a moment. It’s as if all of creation stops…the chaos and brokenness, the death, decay, confusion and questions STOP…and in that moment are offered a simple, dramatic and piercing answer. In Romans 8 and 1 Corinthians 15, Paul tells us what it is – but in that moment and the one that soon follows, it is shouted from within creation itself. Inasmuch as the empty tomb of our Jesus said time ago, death loses and life is victorious, humanity’s reborn, graves emptied and redemption begins. In my experience there is a moment just about here.

Good Morning – I’m on my way to Wiggle Worms. If you don’t have a preschooler, you are probably wondering what in the world wiggle worms is! Each Tuesday from 8:30 – noon, we have lots of wiggling preschoolers arrive here at Sierra Bible. They are cared for each week as they listen to Bible stories, do simple preschool crafts and games, and interact with new little friends while their moms or dads have the morning out. It’s a great way for parents to attend a Bible study, go to a dental appointment, a run or meet a friend for coffee. Well, I’ve got to run — remember Jesus said, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children.” (NLT)

Several weeks ago in our summer series, “Designer Living”, our church family was encouraged to participate in an interactive that involved surrendering our “worries” to the Lord. The theme and passage of scripture that we were looking at that morning were a challenge to us all to be people of trust and faith instead of worry & fret.
When given the opportunity to surrender a concern, a burden, a worry to the Lord by writing it on the “worry walls”, our church family flooded forward. It was a moving and inspirational time for many. But, it was a sobering time for me. Here we are, people with faith in God and committed followers of Christ lined up because we are filled with worry.
Over the next several days, I left my office and walked through the Family Life Center reading the “worry walls” and praying for our church family and their concerns. My hope was that I could help carry people’s burdens and at the same time offer those concerns to the Lord.
Perhaps you could do that too!
Pastor Michael
