Book Review: The Good Fight
It is time for another book review and we couldn't think of a better one to highlight as we're just DAYS AWAY from the Married On Purpose event here at the church. If you haven't signed up, please do. You can sign up through the app or website today. Yep, right now. You sure can. You will not want to miss hearing the Parsons' story of how they have worked out their differences and tragedy through marriage. Speaking of differences ... we are talking about THE GOOD FIGHT today. Yip!
I would place my hand on the bet that most people do not enter marriage for the sake of conflict. Just a wild hare that I'm correct on that one, and even though many of us would likely agree that we did not or do not plan to enter marriage for the thrill of conflict, it sure does hit fast. From where to date night, to who's family for the holidays, conflict arises. And those are the easy ones! With or without warning, we come face to face with the ugliness of who we are while arguing.
Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott have written numerous relationship-based books. THE GOOD FIGHT is being highlighted today because, not only is it a go-to for Pastor Nate and will be given away to one lucky winner at the Married on Purpose event, but also because I appreciate their gusto for not shying away from conflict, but rather knowing and teaching how to do it well. This book walks readers through learning what your fight type is and how to pair that with your partner's. As much as I don't want to admit it, my words can hurt. And often times they're words I don't actually mean or are in a context I don't necessarily desire, but the issue needs to be resolved and I don't quite know the exact words or how to say it well until it comes out. Then I feel guilty when it's harsh. Maybe you're in the spiral of not quite understanding why all you seem to do is fight with the person opposite you. Maybe today you've questioned those vows you said or your partner said. Resolution seems distant and possibly impossible. This book is for you. But this book, in my opinion, is also for the yet-to-be married; for the single person reading this who desires companionship. We encounter conflict just about everywhere. Build that library!
You will also learn, and get this, the benefits of a good fight. Ten years ago I would have laughed in your face if you told me there was such a thing as a good fight. Thank the Lord for humility! Wouldn't you love to have the tools to identify the issue as it comes, utilize the positives of both of your fight types, and quickly resolve whatever the issue is while building one another up? I'm not joking! This is possible. Goodness, I'm talking myself into reading it again. My husband is thrilled, I'm sure.
Ok, I think I've gushed enough about this book. I hope you win it this Friday! Really, truly. Thanks again for reading and joining with us in another book review! If you have a stellar book that I should highlight, please let me know: emilyt@sierrabible.com. See you soon my friends!
